Chaos broke out Friday evening along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as a combined team of policemen and secret service operatives (DSS) attempted to arrest Yoruba activist, Sunday Adeyemo, better known as Sunday Igboho.
In a now trending video clip (watch below), Igboho, who is topless, is seen with his men daring the security operatives to “do their worst” before they drive off.
According to a statement by Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, a former Minister of Aviation, Igboho was on his way to meet with 93-year-old Afenifere Chieftain, Ayo Adebanjo, when the incident occurred.
The statement read in part, “I just spoke to my brother Sunday Igboho. He told me there was a violent attempt to arrest him this afternoon by a joint team of soldiers, DSS operatives and policemen numbering about 40 on the Ibadan/Lagos Expressway whilst he was on his way to see Baba Ayo Adebanjo in Lagos.
“I condemn this attempt to ambush and abduct him. It is not only reckless but also very dangerous. If the security agencies want to see him all they need to do is to invite him to their office. I am not aware of any crime that he has committed and I urge restraint on all sides.
“Let me also send a warning to the Federal Government that Sunday Igboho is a hero to millions of Yoruba and either killing him or detaining him unlawfully would be the biggest mistake they could make. Building bridges, dialogue and the pursuit of peace is better than intimidation, threats, violence and war. A word is enough for the wise.”
EReporters had reported how the federal government recently froze Igboho's bank accounts over his campaign against Fulani herdsmen in the South-West. The herders were alleged to be behind the rising waves of killing, kidnapping and ra.ping in the region.
Reacting to the account freezing, Igboho warned the FG to unfreeze his bank accounts or face massive protests in the South West.
Igboho, speaking with Vanguard, confirmed that all his accounts were frozen, because some people were collecting donations.
However, he insisted he had no hand in the said donations.
Igboho, who had issued a quit notice to Fulani herdsmen in Oyo and Ogun states, further made it clear he was determined to end criminality in the region.
“They have frozen my bank accounts because I’m fighting a just cause. I know Yoruba people are behind me.
“I will not relent. I must achieve my aims by putting an end to criminalities in Yorubaland.
“If they refuse to release my accounts, there will be serious protests across the South-West.
“The Yoruba are living in fear. They are afraid that the killer-herdsmen might attack them,” he said.
This is coming as Igboho apologised to Enitan Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife, hours after he described the monarch as a “Fulani slave”.
While attacking the Ooni during an Instagram Live interview, Igboho said the Ooni failed to tell President Muhammadu Buhari during a meeting in Abuja, the truth about the plight of Yoruba people in the hands of herders.
Igboho had, during the virtual town hall with Yorubas in the Diapora, described Ogunwusi; Bola Tinubu, national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC); Seyi Makinde, the Oyo governor, and Yoruba politicians in general, as “Fulani slaves”.
Igboho had said, “When Ooni met with Buhari over the herdsmen issue, Ooni should have told Buhari the truth but he did not. When Ooni returned, he started tackling me to leave the remaining task to the government to finish. You can imagine that kind of talk?
“Alaafin of Oyo has asked me to meet him over the matter. Alaafin should have been the one invited to meet Buhari but since the Ooni was invited, he should be bold to tell the President the whole truth and make the demands of the Yoruba people known to the President.
“The Ooni disappointed himself. Some politicians are behind Ooni’s latest move. He invited me to his palace but I refused to go. I would have gone if he had represented us well but he did not. I won’t honour any monarch who does not cooperate with me. Enough is enough, the Fulani have done enough.”
However, Igboho in a followup interview with Isokan Omo Oodua TV, an online broadcast medium, begged for forgiveness from the monarch, whom he described as his father, adding that he was caught in the moment.
“They said I insulted the Ooni of Ife. I and the monarch, as well as the Olugbon, have spoken on the phone.
“The Yoruba tradition doesn’t permit the insult of elders. But because I was pained by the issue, my tongue was caught up in the moment. I spoke according to how pained I was. It wasn’t the Ooni alone I directed my words at, I also did to other elders,” Igboho said.
“It’s a case of father and child. I and the monarch have spoken as well as the Olugbon. I did not insult the Ooni. And if it appears as if I did, he should forgive me.”
