The Nigerian Catholic Priests Association (NCPA), Makurdi Diocese, has urged Benue State youths to stay vigilant and defend their faith, farmlands, and communities amid rising violence.
Speaking on Sunday, Chairman Rev. Fr Joseph Beba condemned the recent wave of kîllīngs in communities like Tse Orbiam, Ahume, Jimba, Nagi-Camp, Aondoana, Yelewata, and Abegana, where over 50 people, including women, children, and Rev. Fr Solomon Atongo, were kílled in coordinated attacks within the past month, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.
Describing the assaults as “inhumane, barbaric, and a gross violation of human life’s sanctity,” Beba emphasized the inalienable right to self-defense and called on federal and state governments to act decisively to stop the blóôdshed and restore security.
He urged security forces, particularly the military, to demonstrate professionalism and patriotism, applying the same urgency seen during elections to protect lives and property.
Beba stressed that governments must fulfill their constitutional duty to safeguard citizens’ lives and dignity with sincerity and transparency, rather than issuing mere press statements.
He demanded immediate compensation for victims and the safe return of displaced persons to their homes. The cleric also reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to truth, resisting intimidation, and continuing humanitarian aid to victims, while noting the lack of adequate recognition for these efforts.
Beba reminded authorities of their responsibility to ensure access to clean water, housing, education, freedom of worship, and protection from threats to peace.
