Police Officer Emoruwa Olabode, stationed at Idanre in Ondo State, was detained and moved to Abuja after allegedly posting about a planned nationwide demonstration set for July 21, 2025, in a WhatsApp group.
The demonstration seeks better working conditions for active and retired police officers. Olabode was arrested on July 4, 2025, and held in isolation at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Akure before his transfer on Monday.
Two other group administrators, Otamere Ewamade and Fasoyin Ayodeji, were also detained in Lagos and sent to Abuja weeks earlier. The arrests have sparked concerns about efforts to silence dissent within the Nigeria Police Force.
Olabode’s wife reported that their children are ill, and police have withheld his phone, preventing him from sending money for their medical care.
The demonstration highlights demands for exiting the Contributory Pension Scheme, which retirees say causes financial hardship and delays, pushing for an independent Police Pension Board to address their unique challenges.
